We went on a mission to discover live music venues in Cape Town. On this particular night our attention was drawn to the Blah Blah Bar. It is a cosy, intimate venue that resides in an old Victorian style house on Kloof Street in the heart of Cape Town’s city residential area, Tamboerskloof. Blah Blah prides itself in being a “community space for creative like-minded peeps”. Being a regular host to a wide variety of Cape Town Music acts (like Riaan Smit’s Crimson House Blues, Mr Cat & The Jackal, Nomadic Orchestra & Los Tacos) as well as an art gallery, you can be sure to find some entertainment here. BTW Tuesdays is their Pizza special. Check out there website for more details on whats coming up next: http://www.blahblahbar.co.za/
On this night we got to meet Gareth from Saxit. Saxit is a Saxophone quartet based in Cape Town who play a combination of Jazz, Blues & Pop and were hosting a gig to collaborate with 3 amazing singers & a rapper. Want to know where Saxit will be playing next… keep tabs on their FB page!
A week prior to this video we did a survey walk around the city center at night to ask people where their favourite places are to listen to live music in Cape Town. One of the answers that popped up was Obviouzly Armchair in Obs. Observatory has always had a reputation of being the student hangout area of UCT with its trendy and dodgy little digs along lower main street, where the music is good and the drink are cheap. Armchair is exactly one such a place and it prides itself on its mini theatre and the something on “every day of the month” lineup. You can expect anything from stand up comedy nights, to open mic to poetry and of course live music… check out their FB for what’s up next.
On this particular night we met up with Manager Wayne to hear a little more about what else we can expect. After a round of beers at the bonfire in the outside area (where they play classic cult films on a wall cinema, I know right?) Wayne introduce us to the live act of the evening: Mae Sithole. A fantastic evening of afro pop jazz fusion ensued. Mae is just absolutely lovely in person and has so much charisma on stage. You can follow her on her FB page to keep up with where you might find her next gig.
Before heading off to the Trash Cabaret event, we decided a little sunset cruise along Table Bay would be in order.
We joined the Trash Cabaret – Carnival of Dreams at Hillcrest Quarry in Cape Town. The Trash Cabaret is a collaboration of local and international performers featuring circus, trapeze, fire dancing, burlesque, aerial, juggling and more – all to live music!!
We check out the live music scene in Cape Town city Centre on a First Thursday.
We would love to feature more live music, so PLEASE drop us a line and we will come and join you.
